ANDY MARSHALL: ASTON VILLA

Full Name: Andrew Marshall

Age: 37

Current Club: Aston villa

Previous Clubs. Norwich City, Ipswich Town, Millwall, Coventry City

What gloves are you currently wearing?

Sells aqua

What boots are you currently wearing?

Adidas World Cup

What are your goalkeeping ambitions?

At my stage it is to play as long as possible. My aim is to get to 40 years of age.

What are your previous achievements in football?

England u18 euro winners England u21. Fa cup final appearance 467 games to date. European football.

Who is your Goalkeeping idol?

Peter schemeichel

What is the best thing about being a keeper?

The work we do as keepers.we have a close knit relationship with the other keepers.

What is the worst thing about being a keeper?

Nowhere to hide when things go wrong.

What is the best game you have ever played in and why?

Most memorable was the Fa cup against Man Utd although we lost.

Who is the best keeper you have ever trained with? (pro or non pro)

I would have to say Brad Friedel simply because he taught me as a elder pro how to conduct myself on the pitch, an the work you need to do to maintain it at the top level.

What is the best advice you would give to any other keeper?

Work hard. Anybody who thinks it will just come to them will get a very nasty awakening. Football is a very hard industry that will eat you up and spit you out. Work hard and listen to the right people, this way you will have no regrets.

Who has been your biggest inspiration to date?

I have many people who have helped me on my career but no more than my father who was there from day one, taking me all over the country and financially looking after me buying me all my equipment.

How do you mentally move on after making a mistake?

You box the mistake off. It's almost like you have to put the mistake into a section of your brain and lock it away. This is where all the hard work you do in training pays off as you will become mentally stronger the harder you train. One mistake does and should not destroy all the hard work you do.

Do you have any a specific technique for taking a goal kick?

A lot is made of the C & J shape. These are relevant but for me the most important things are keeping your head down so you see your foot strike the ball, stay compact and tight, as a loose body will mean you are not in control. Finally as you kick the ball, kick through and across it and make sure your whole body weight goes through the ball so you end up walking through the ball. A little point, don't start your run up to far from the ball.

If you could pass on any tips to a young keeper, what would it be?

Work hard an listen to good advice. As a young keeper it is down to you to find out what that good advice is. I see many keepers being taught so badly I have genuine concern that what we teaching young keepers is not of the level required, hence the lack of talented international keepers.

What is the best ground you have ever played at and why?

Manchester United- need I say anymore.

Who do you think is the greatest keeper of all time?

For me either Shilton or Schemeichel

Are you left footed or right footed?

Right

How do you normally prepare in the morning for a match?

Rest. Watching tv. Have a coffee and the some lunch.

Which keeper do you think you most resemble?

Me

Do you have any regrets in your career?

I have given everything in my career so I don't think I have regrets

I didn’t, I would use the hurt and pain of making a mistake to motivate me to not make another one!

No special technique. I tried to make sure that if I kicked one bad one, my next kick would be a safe kick to get my rhythm back. It didn’t always work!!

Precision Goalkeeping Vortex Contact Classic

What boots are you currently wearing?

Nike Tiempo Soft Ground or Nike CTR Firm Ground

What are your goalkeeping ambitions?

Too play at the highest level possible!

What are your previous achievements in football?

Not many league or cup titles so probably league player of the year would be my best.

Who are your Goalkeeping idols?

Joe Hart, Jack Butland & Ben Foster.

What is the best thing about being a keeper?

I would say the unique training and the importance of your position within a team! also not having to run around for 90 minutes is always good!

What is the worst thing about being a keeper?

Outfield players that think they know everything about being a goalkeeper and don't appreciate how hard it can be!

What is the best game you have ever played in and why?

Cup final in 2012, was played at Exeter City's ground, St James Park , we lost 1-0 but I made a lot of saves and kicked well throughout. Even though we lost I was very pleased with my performance and to keep the score down as low as I did against a very good attacking side!

Who is the best keeper you have ever trained with? (pro or non pro)

Trained with many great keepers, it would not be fair to pick one!

What is the best advice you would give to any other keeper?

Always try to play at the highest level possible and go for any opportunities given to you!

Who has been your biggest inspiration to date?

My High School PE Teacher Robbie Hallam, he was also a goalkeeper, he always had faith in my ability and his door was always open for footballing or any other problems I had and he still checks up on how I am doing even though I am no longer a pupil at the school.

How do you mentally move on after making a mistake?

After a game that I have made a game changing mistake in I tend to try and not think about it and do something like go for a swim or play some Fifa. I then make sure in my next training session I talk to my coach about it and see what he thinks I should of done.

Do you have any a specific technique for taking a goal kick?

I don't have any specific techniques I just tend to try and play out short from the back but if nothing is on I will aim to either wing and try and kick as close to one of my team-mates as possible.

If you could pass on any tips to a young keeper, what would it be?

Try and not to make the same mistake twice and to learn from everything you do, and also not to try and be like another keeper, do things your own way.

What is the best ground you have ever played at and why?

Easily St James Park (Exeter City FC) so big compared to what I was used to playing on and such a nice playing surface.

Who do you think is the greatest keeper of all time?

I cant choose one! would be out of Iker Casillas, Oliver Kahn, Gianluigi Buffon and Gordon Banks! All top keepers at club and international level!

Right

How do you normally prepare in the morning for a match?

Don't get up too early, have breakfast, pack my bag then watch some tv or play some fifa and relax before leaving for the match!
